Temple of Abydos or Sethi I
The Temple of Abydos is the most important of the monuments and the biggest of all the temples of this city. It was erected by Sethy I in honor to Osiris.
Abydos was considered to be the place where the head of Osiris was buried and it is for it that it was a habitual burials place. The Temple of Abydos was for the ancient Egyptians a peregrination place, likewise for the Catholics it is the Vatican or for the Muslims it is the Mecca.
The importance of the temple is not only in its architecture but in the big paintings and reliefs that exist in its interior, scenes that represent moments of the life of Sethi I and Ramsés II. There constitute the most important historical and religious document. In this temple there is one of the famous Real Lists that it enumerates 77 kings of Egypt from Menes, of I Dynasty, up to proper Sethi I.
The temple constructed on an area in earring, has a slightly frequent plant in the shape of L. It maintains to a great extent a classic distribution, although there are certain features that differentiate it, like the presence of seven sanctums, which do of him the only Egyptian monument. The whole set is surrounded by a wall, delimiting this way the space destined for the religious offices. For the construction limestone and sandstone was used, and in some cases, granite.
