The city of Luxor is in the place of the famous city of Tebas (in the Ancient Egypt). Tebas was the capital of Egypt from the dynasty 12 and he reached the top during the New Reign. In her, it was habitual that were celebrating festivals, and the temple of Luxor was the center of many of them.

Temple of Luxor

Constructed largely by Ramsés II and Amenhotep III, the function of the Temple of Luxor was to give capacity to the rituals that were celebrated during the festivals. It was realized during the New Empire. It is close to the river Nile and parallel to its shore, and in its origins it was dedicated to the god Amon-Re, to its spouse Mu and to its son Khons.

It was joined to the Karnak temple by means of an avenue flanked by sphinxes. In the course of time, other Pharaohs (like Tutankamón) contributed to the beautification of the enclosure with decorations, less constructions and other changes. This place has survived during all its years of existence like a prayer place, almost until the present day.
